Black Girls Must Die Exhausted: A Novel (Black Girls Must Die Exhausted, Book 1) Customer Reviews
:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Iesha Brown -- Great title, but misleading : Not what i expected. Very disappointed. Finished the book even when i didn’t want to because i spent money on it. It’s about a mixed girl who was raised by her white grandmother. Uses “not all cops” rhetoric. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2019 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Good idea, bad execution : I didn't get past chapter 3. I think the idea of the book is both refreshing to and needed for modern day black women. However, it may have been rushed. Maybe the focus was more on getting it done than getting it done well. I tried to push through but I couldn't. There was just one grammatical error that broke the camel's back. For me, books are not just for entertainment, they are tools used to expand my mind and thinking. If a book is published with grammatical errors and "elementary" words, I remain stagnant or even recede. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2018 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mz.K.Lewis -- I'm Exhausted! : Loved the cover; the book not so much. I picked it up and put it down several times as chapters 1-10 plodded along at a snail's pace but after Chapter 10 things picked up speed. I loved the comradery between Tabitha and her friends Lexis and Laila and the relationship she had with her grandmother. Many societal issues affected each family in this story including racism, sexism, police injustice, workplace problems and mental health but at times it was just too much. The dysfunctional and back and forth relationship between Marc and Tabby completely wore me out. I normally end up rooting for relationships to work out but at the end of this story I felt like why am I reading this and do I really care? Even the hook at the end suggesting a sequel didn't leave me wanting to read more...I just don't have the energy. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Craig -- Entertaining, Enjoyable and Accessible : I happen to be a man and I realize that this book might not have been intended for me. I have to admit the title intrigued me enough to pick up a copy. I usually don't write reviews, but I so thoroughly enjoyed this book, I wanted to encourage others to take the same journey that I did. It's not often that you find a fresh and unique black cultural perspective reflected in fiction, and this book absorbed me into the story, introducing me to characters I not only grew to care about, but whom I learned from. The story was so engaging that I went from being curious to not being able to put the book down. When I reached the last page, I felt like I had found a new friend that I'd miss. Now, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I'll be very happy to revisit the characters. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Marisha -- My life in a book! : I received this book on a Tuesday night and devoured it by Sunday! Before the first chapter ended i was crying and knew I landed myself into a great book. It reflected on the relevant things that happen in the black womens life from taming natural hair to look “presentable”, from depression, police interactions, the long waits at the beauty salon and compromising your very self for “the right man”. I laughed, cried, even got angry and didn’t read it for a day but at the end I was satisfied to be able to relate to all aspects of this book. Very very well done! - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tanisha -- Good but Surface : I picked this book for my book club. The story jumps right in. Not a real build up to the doctor’s visit and the over the top reaction to being pulled over. It’s one thing to be scarred in this day and time in the US but Tabitha acted like she was smuggling drugs across the border. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Captivating, Moving, Well-Written, and Relatable Book! : I absolutely loved this book! The characters seemed to jump off the page...they were so real. I was especially drawn to Tabitha and her grandmother. I even find myself thinking about them from time to time, long after I finished the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2018 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from manderpantz -- Heartwarming and very real : This novel was picked for our online book club, and I'm glad it was chosen. The story touches on a number of very real issues for black people, and more specifically black American women. Without giving away spoilers, it was very eye opening to read the accounts of a black woman who experiences everything from fear over being stopped by the police to how the media and society deem it acceptable for her to wear her hair.
